The year is 1979, you have heard of Earth Wind & Fire but mainly just the hits like 'September', ' Shining Star', and you might've heard 'Fantasy' playing at your local record shop one time. You decide to pick up their newest album 'I am' to see if their ninth studio album was going to keep up their momentum of hits being released. As you put the vinyl on the first song starts playing 'In the Stone' and within seconds you realize you're about to witness one of the greatest albums ever to be released not only by the band, but probably even in the history of funk. The rest of the album has undeniable hits, but something keeps driving you back to listen to that first song. It's effortlessly catchy but still has the complex musical innovativeness that you love hearing. It's easy to listen to and gives off nothing but positive vibes. It's perfect, in a way you can't describe it.

The intro to this song is truly remarkable. It begins with horns playing sophisticated melodies and a chord progression that starts with the emotional chromatic lead down into the flat seventh chord only to uplift you back up with a IV - V - I progression. The strings come in later, adding their own harmonies and movement to the mix. Meanwhile, the bass, guitar, and drums are establishing the groove and funk that will continue throughout the song. All of this happens in the first 35 seconds, and the album, titled 'I am,' has even more in store. As the song progresses, it manages to blend complex harmonies and grandiosity with a more straightforward structure, thanks to key elements from the intro that keep the listener engaged. It's hard to create a complex song that is also accessible and enjoyable, but Earth, Wind & Fire succeed in doing just that. The song is truly indescribably perfect and must be heard to be fully appreciated."
